New Year, New Look
There are a lot of great changes on the horizon for CU Community Credit Union. While we began in 1934 as the credit union for City Utilities employees, over the years, we opened membership to all who live or work in Greene and Christian Counties because we believe that everyone should have access to better rates, lower fees and more personalized service.
For 2012, CU Community has evolved the design of its classic water drop logo to better signify the breadth of its community membership. This new evolution of the logo accomplishes two things: it embraces and respects our heritage, while offering us the freedom and flexibility to welcome more members and expand our horizons.
Members can look forward to a new website and other tech goodies coming in the first quarter!

Brian Brown
Reporter, Springfield Business Journal
A move by Bank of America to start charging a $5 monthly fee for debit card purchases appears to mark a new trend for larger banks, and perhaps creates opportunities for smaller institutions promoting their own debit card rebate programs.
On Sept. 29, Charlotte, N.C.-based Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) announced it would implement a monthly debit card fee in early 2012.
Regions Bank, Wells Fargo and Chase Bank already have made moves to retrieve revenue they expect to lose under Dodd-Frank Act regulations 13 namely cutting by half the amount banks with more than $10 billion in assets can charge merchants in debit card transactions.
Regions Bank, for instance, on Sept. 24 began charging $4 per month for debit card use by customers with its least expensive checking accounts, which cost $10 per month, according to spokesman Mel Campbell.
Effective Oct. 1, the interchange fee on debit card purchases is capped at 21 cents, plus five basis points per transaction or .05 percent of the transaction value, according to the Federal Reserve Eighth District office in St. Louis.
The average for interchange fees collected by banks last year, according to a draft version of the new rules, was 44 cents per transaction.
Bank of America spokeswoman Betty Riess said bank officials have estimated the new rules will cost Bank of America $2 billion in annual revenues. The bank recorded $134 billion in 2010 revenue.
1CThe economics of offering a debit card have changed with recent regulations. The price of a debit card was previously determined by the amount and type of transaction. We were able to pass along some of those costs to merchants, but because of regulatory changes, we are adjusting our pricing to reflect today 19s economics, 1D Riess said.
At least two financial institutions operating in the Springfield market quickly responded to the bank trends.
Springfield-based CU Community Credit Union and Bentonville, Ark.-based Arvest Bank issued news releases touting rewards programs for debit card users. Arvest, which has assets in excess of $11 billion, is sticking with its program despite being subject to the interchange cap.
1CWe considered a number of options knowing (regulations were) coming down the pike, 1D said Rodney Shepard, president of Arvest Bank 19s Springfield market. 1CWe 19ve chosen to stay with free checking. We 19ve chosen not to charge for debit cards. We believe our customers see value in those products. 1D
Shepard said he hopes its debit card rewards program, which offers points for purchases that can be redeemed for gift cards at places such as Bass Pro Shops or Wal-Mart, will attract customers from larger banks. In addition, on Oct. 3, the bank announced it would drop its overdraft fees to a flat $17 for all accounts beginning Nov. 7.
CU Community Credit Union President Judy Hadsall said its CashCard program rewards customers who use the card as a credit card 13 which is more profitable for the institution 13 instead of punching in the personal identification numbers.
1CWe wanted to do something different than the other institutions out there are doing, 1D Hadsall said. 1CWe 19re trying to increase transactions. 1D
With a growing number of consumers frustrated by fees, she said the credit union 19s strategy is to incentivize debit card usage to generate revenue and compete against larger banks.
As a card issuer, Hadsall said the credit union, which has roughly $47 million in assets, makes 16 cents more per transaction, or 41 cents per swipe, when customers sign on the line to complete a purchase instead of punching in their PIN. When the card is used as a credit card, it typically cuts out the middle men.
1CBasically, the merchant pays a fee for every (noncash) transaction that occurs, and that fee is divvied up among several players, 1D Hadsall said.
Companies such as Visa and MasterCard receive a portion of the fee, she said, while regional networks such as Pulse or Star can take a piece of the pie, as well. 1CAnd then we 19re on the tail end as the issuer, 1D she said.
Neither Shepard nor Hadsall were surprised Bank of America and other large institutions are implementing new charges.
1CIf they are used to getting 44 cents per transaction and now they 19re making 21 cents plus, they 19re going to make it up somewhere, 1D Hadsall said.
Hadsall is hopeful the new regulations will benefit smaller banks and credit unions, but she 19s skeptical, too. She said as new rules emerge from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau 13 which was created by the legislation that established the cap on interchange fees 13 she thinks all financial institutions might have to adjust and change their strategies.

As checking account holders continue to express their frustration over mounting fees at regional and national banks, CU Community Credit Union launches CardCash--a program that allows customers the ability to earn cash for their everyday debit card purchases.
Starting on October 6, 2011, CU Community customers will automatically earn cash rewards on eligible non-pin purchases and the earnings will be credited to their checking accounts. Customers with multiple debit cards linked to a single checking account can use their combined purchase power to get to the $500 cash back more quickly.
"We already offer our customers free checking accounts and debit cards, which are becoming less common among financial institutions today, and now we are also rewarding our customers for using their CU Community debit card for all of their day-to-day spending," says CU Community President and CEO Judy Hadsall.
A smarter, more profitable relationship
As reports continue to pile in about large banks increasing checking fees, instituting debit card fees and cutting debit rewards, there is a window of opportunity for CU Community Credit Union to reward customer loyalty.
"It's a win-win for the customer," Hadsall says. "Not only do our customers get free checking accounts and debit cards with no monthly maintenance fees, we are also giving them cash back for using their debit cards. Everyone is pinching pennies during these tough economic times, and this is another way we can help people stretch their dollars a little further."

Ozarks Credit Unions, a network of credit unions across the southwest Missouri, raised more than $32,600 for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals of CoxHealth at the 15th Annual Golfing for Kids Tournament, held September 9, 2011, at Rivercut Golf Course.
Representatives from 10 credit unions organized the event this year, including Americ's Credit Union, Assemblies of God Credit Union, BluCurrent Credit Union, Community Financial Credit Union, CU Community Credit Union, Educational Community Credit Union, Metro Credit Union, Mid Missouri Credit Union, Springfield Catholic Credit Union and TelComm Credit Union.
More than 120 golfers participated in the scramble, and Federal Protection, Federal Construction and Route 66 Extended Warranty were major sponsors.
"On behalf of all the children and families who are able to receive assistance because of this event, Children's Miracle Network Hospitals would like to thank all of the committee members, sponsors, and volunteers for making the annual 'Golfing for Kids' golf tournament such a huge success,"says Kelly Anderson, director of financial services for CMN Hospitals of CoxHealth. "Because of the continued commitment of credit unions in our community, local children are able to get medical care that may not otherwise have been possible. The success of this tournament is a testament to the philosophy and values of credit unions."
Earlier this year, the credit unions were awarded a "Miracle Match" from CO-OP Financial Services. This match program, which is only available to credit unions raising funds from CMN, allowed them an extra $10,000 to donate to the CMN Hospitals.
CMN Hospitals uses the funds raised at the tournament to assist local sick and injured children who need medical care. The Springfield-area credit unions have raised more than $500,000 over 15 years for CMN Hospitals.

Security experts are warning consumers to be on guard for phony emails that may attempt to lure them into clicking on viral attachments or harmful Web links.
"Phishing" is an attempt to use email to try to get you to reveal more personal information about yourself. This can include usernames, passwords, Social Security numbers, or account numbers. CU Community Credit Union is encouraging its members to take the following precautions to protect themselves from possible phishing scams:
- Do not open email from someone you don't know.
- Don't use the links in an email, instant message, or chat to get to any web page if you suspect the message might not be authentic or you don't know the sender or user's handle.
- Don't provide any personal information. A common phishing practice is to ask people to click a link to update their personal information. Don't do it. When in doubt, call the company to double check, and forward the email to the Federal Trade Commission at spam@uce.gov.
The meeting will take place at 5:30 p.m. in the City Utilities Training Center, which is located just north of the City Utilities main offices at 301 E. Central Street.
Join us for the brief business meeting and refreshments, followed by bingo and door prizes. Copies of the credit union's year-end statements will be available for review.
"As a member of CU Community Credit Union, you are also an owner," said President and CEO Judy Hadsall. "We encourage our members to come by for a business update and to meet up with your fellow credit union members."

On Tuesday's NBC TODAY show, Matt Lauer reported on credit card changes that will impact credit card holders across the country. Instead of only penalizing cardholders that are late on payments or that carry large balances, now "good consumers" have also become targets. Specifically, soon many consumers will be charged for paying their accounts in full, not carrying large enough balances or not using the cards at all.
Contrary to these actions, CU Community Credit Union has lowered rates on their credit cards, just as consumers gear up for holiday spending... continue reading release.
